What is a Blank?

A Blank is a Fulfiller-owned product configured to generate an output to a pre-defined print specification. Depending on the type of Blank, a wide array of tools exist in the KornitX platform for creating Virtual products. Please see this article for more information.

Typically you would engage our product creation services for Blank product creation if you are a Fulfiller or Self Fulfilling and looking to create Blanks for retailers / demand generators to use.  Our platform is designed for users to create their own products so have a look at this page if you are interested in giving it a go!

What is a Virtual?

Please see this article for an explanation on what a Virtual product is. Put simply it's an artwork-only or personalised product created from a Fulfiller's Blank product.

As with Blank products, our platform is designed for users to quickly create a range of their own Virtuals, please see this page to get started.

General Guidelines for Basic vs Advanced products

The pricing for product creation varies depending on the amount of setup required. There are two bands; Basic and Advanced for each product type: 2d Blanks, 3d Blanks, 2d Virtuals and  3d Virtuals.
It's important to mention the source of the Blank product if you are ordering Virtual products. This will either also be a created by KornitX if ordered as a paid service, or from a Fulfiller-created product that already exists in the KornitX platform. Please make sure to provide this information when speaking to the Solutions Architect at the outset of your order.
Please see the examples listed below for a general idea of the product types that might fit each classification. Exactly which pricing band a product falls into will will be confirmed once all appropriate information and assets have been received and the overall requirements are understood.

The Pros and Cons of 3D Products

3D Pros
  1. Depending on the specific product it can give a better representation to the end user as sometimes 2d products (especially multi-aspect) can feel a little abstract
  2. Can show wrap print areas in their natural state
  3. Can show multiple print-areas on different sides of the product in-situ
  4. Sometimes the user journey can be easier
  5. Can be fun and interactive
  6. Visually impressive

3D Cons
  1. Not possible to set up in the platform as a user. 3d products are a paid service so lead times can vary depending on number of models, model complexity and existing 3d production queue (By comparison a 2d product can be set up self-service in as little as 10 mins)
  2. As 3d products are a paid service there is an associated cost which varies depending on complexity (see top of page)
  3. In live preview apps it is not possible to edit text and images interactively on 3d products since mouse (desktop) or finger control (mobile) is given over to navigation in 3d space. As a result the user must use the move/rotate/scale tools in the UI which can be cumbersome when compared to 2d.
  4. Increased performance requirements over 2d (device / browser) plus longer initial load times
  5. A 3d live preview can be unnecessary if the product can be represented better with a 2d photograph eg: a notebook, poster.
  6. Can't be used for multi-page customisation eg: books or calendars
  7. Renderer limitations on some transparent products featuring print areas eg: water bottles

Should I use 3D?
It really depends on the products in question, some unquestionably benefit from a 3d live preview whilst for others it's unnecessary. A 2d product featuring a high quality lifestyle photograph (see point 3.3 in link below) is visually impressive, can be created in a matter of minutes and will perform better across all devices. This is our recommended approach for the majority of use cases - Link
