Summary
Cover
Scales the artwork to fill the print area completely so that there's no empty space. This is done by scaling the shortest length of the artwork to match the longest length of the print area. Note that using this option can result in some of the artwork being cropped.
Typical use: Photo upload products
It can be tempting to use the Cover fit mode to scale a smaller image file eg: 100 x 100 px to fill a much larger print output. Please be aware that using this approach can result in artifacts at the edges of the document due to the pixel rounding that occurs . For best results use an image that matches the print dimensions as closely as possible at the correct dpi.
Contain
Displays the entire artwork within the print area. This is done by scaling the longest length of the artwork to match the shortest length of the print area and thus ensuring the entire image is visible.
Typical use: To display a logo or image that should not be cropped
