Outputting an EAN Barcode at the Branding Station

Outputting an EAN Barcode at the Branding Station

Introduction

It is now possible to output EAN barcodes (specifically EAN-13 barcodes) at the Branding Station.  As part of your production process, there may be a requirement to attach an EAN barcode label to the item.

These can now be printed at the branding scan point and attached to the item, prior to dispatch.

Setup Requirements

The requirements to set this up are:
  1. The Barcode field of the product populated with an EAN-13 number.
  2. An attribute set that contains an attribute that's configured in a specific way.
  3. The attribute set applied to the products' Branding Attribute Set field.

Populating the Barcode Field of the Product

Go to the eCommerce tab of the product and under the Info tab, locate the Barcode field.  Add your EAN-13 number for that item to the Barcode field and click Save.

If the product is set up with variants, you will most likely have a separate EAN number per variant.  In this case, you wouldn't populate the Barcode field of the blank product, you would instead populate the Barcode field of the stock products that are linked to each of the variants.

Setting Up the Attribute Set

Go to Settings>Attribute Sets and create a new attribute set using the "Add Set +" button in the top right.

Give the new attribute set a name, select an owner in the Details tab and click Save.  A new tab named Attributes will appear on the left.

Select the Attributes tab and click the "+ Attribute" button to add a new attribute to the attribute set.  Give the attribute a group name and click the ">" on the right of the attribute to view the General section of the attribute.

The key part of this in terms of the EAN barcode is to add the value "print-ean-13-label" to the Spec field.  Once added click the Save button.  You may also wish to add an image to the attribute to indicate to the operator what's required.  You should end up with something similar to what's shown in the image below.

Adding the Attribute Set as a Branding Attribute to the Product

Finally, go to the eCommerce tab of the blank product and under Info, search for the Branding Attribute Set field.

The field is a searchable drop down where you can search for the attribute set you have just created.  Select the attribute set and click save.

Workflow

As normal, you would download the artwork and produce the item.  You would QC the item and then move to the Branding Station.

When the item is scanned at the Branding station a Print button will appear.

Clicking this button will result in the EAN barcode being output, ready for you to print.

Once the EAN barcode has been printed, the operator would tick the box to confirm they have added the EAN barcode to the product and the Branding Station would then direct them to the Shipping Station to Dispatch the item as normal.
