Embroidery | Auto-digitisation: How to Optimise Your Results

Overview

There are a number of potential variables to consider when using Auto-digitisation. The most critical is the quality and format of the artwork that is being uploaded to the product. It is important to educate and guide your customers in order to yield the best possible results when utilising our Embroidery features. This document will detail stitch file results based on artwork quality, and how to ensure better results by using validation settings on CPP.

How important is image quality?

The Auto-Digitising calculations give good results with good artwork and poor results from poor artwork. For these reasons we advise A) setting Recommended Image Width and Height values on the image areas to notify users when they upload small/low quality images, and B) informing users on the website on how they can achieve the best results. 

Important Note: Background colour will be auto-removed during the Auto-digitisation process. We highly recommend the use of high resolution PNG's with transparency for optimum results. 
GOOD BITMAP ARTWORK IS:

High resolution – in the order of 150 to 300 dpi at the real embroidery size, Eg for 100 mm or 4 inch embroidery: ~ 600 to 1200 pixels. The more small detail there is – the higher the resolution required
Clean solid colour areas – not dithered colours
No anti-aliasing at colour boundaries
No colour shading or gradient colours
Transparent background, or distinct colour background that is a different colour from all the other design colours
The feature can do a good job with “less than ideal” bitmap artwork, providing the resolution is high enough. This includes bitmaps with anti-aliasing present, colour dithering, large number of colour shades caused by saving as .JPG files. A high resolution image makes these effects small, relative to the shapes of the design, and so can be handled nicely. However low resolution artwork does not provide enough information to accurately determine the design shapes from the “blurry edges” caused by anti-aliasing and colour shading.  

GOOD VECTOR ARTWORK IS:

Closed vector shapes filled with solid colour, with or without optional thin or thick outlines
Scaled accurately to the desired embroidery size
No colour shading or gradients
Either no background, or a colour background different from all the other design colours
Not a lot of small detail that can’t be easily embroidered 

What can be set on CPP?

It is possible to enforce some validation options for uploaded images in regards to A) Image size and B) Image format. If the uploaded file does not meet these specifications, the User will be prompted before being allowed to proceed / or the image will be rejected.

Minimum Image Resolution Recommendation - This can be set on the Image Area of the product via Image Areas > Advanced. You can specify a recommended width and height (in pixels) for uploaded images. If the end user does not upload an image larger than these specified values, a Validation notification will be displayed (see Figure 2).  For more information please see this article:

Allowed Image Upload File Extensions - Accepted file formats can be set via a Custom Config option. Any specified file extension (eg .PNG, .PDF etc) will be accepted in the App when the image is uploaded. Any Image that is uploaded that is in a different file format will be rejected and not load.
